# Creating the Next Generation of Marine Engineers
Building Australia’s next generation of marine engineers.
Programmed and Svitzer Australia are helping develop the next generation of marine engineering professionals. Combining paid employment, structured training and practical experience, the Marine Engineer Traineeship provides a pathway towards a rewarding career in Australia’s maritime industry.

## What This Opportunity Offers
With a recognised shortage of qualified marine engineers across the industry, we're serious about developing the next generation of talent. That's why we're committed to supporting the right candidates through their AMSA Engineer Class 3 NC Certificate of Competency at the Australian Maritime College (AMC), as well as providing practical sea time, mentorship from experienced engineers, and guidance throughout the certification process.
- **Structured Training Program:** Participants will be employed by Programmed as the legal employer and hosted to Svitzer Australia. The program offers a clear pathway to achieving the AMSA Engineer Class 3 CoC qualification, ensuring participants are well prepared for a successful career in the maritime industry including as Tug Engineer at Svitzer Australia.
- **AMSA Engineer Class 3:** The program includes a fully funded 13-week training block delivered at the Australian Maritime College (AMC) in Launceston, Tasmania - a world-class maritime training facility. All course fees, flights and accommodation are covered. Successful applicants must be willing to attend training at the AMC in Launceston.
- **Hands-On Experience:** Participants will gain practical sea time and guidance from experienced marine engineers, applying their skills in a real-world setting and completing the sea service required for certification.
## Program Timeline – Your Journey to Becoming a Marine Engineer
Stage 1
### Program Commencement and Foundation Learning
- Induction and onboarding with Programmed and Svitzer
- Safety orientation and workplace familiarisation
- Introduction to vessel systems and towage operations
- Early mentoring and team integration at your home port
Stage 2
### Australian Maritime College Launceston, Tasmania
- 13-weeks fully funded residential training at the Australian Maritime College
- Flights and accommodation provided
- World-class maritime education blending theory and practice
- Build technical knowledge for AMSA Engineer Class 3 certification
Stage 3
### On-The-Job Experience
- Return to home port and apply new skills in live towage operations
- Complete sea service and logbook requirements
- Gain experience in vessel maintenance and safety systems
- Ongoing mentoring and support to complete your training program
Stage 4
### Final Preparation and Graduation
- Complete final assessments and readiness checks
- Achieve AMSA Engineer Class 3 NC Certificate of Competency
- Celebrate program completion and graduation
- Explore career progression opportunities within Svitzer
## Locations
Previous recruitment campaigns have supported opportunities in Port Pirie, Dampier/Karratha, Geraldton, Bunbury and Darwin. Future opportunities and locations will depend on operational requirements and will be confirmed when recruitment opens.
### To be eligible, applicants must hold:
- An AMSA-recognised trade qualification: [amsa.gov.au/workshop-skill-equivalent](https://www.amsa.gov.au/qualifications-training/equivalent-qualifications-and-skill-recognition/workshop-skill-equivalent); OR
- MED 1 Certificate of Competency.
