Programmed, in partnership with Port Waratah Coal Services, is offering a four-year apprenticeship programme starting in January 2027 at the world's largest coal export terminal.

Launch a rewarding career at a major Hunter Valley coal terminal.

Port Waratah Coal Services is a key part of the Hunter Valley Coal Chain, operating the world's largest coal export terminal from Newcastle.

This programme gives apprentices the chance to build practical skills in a supportive, inclusive environment while working towards a nationally recognised qualification.

Two trade pathways into heavy industry.

The programme is designed for motivated people ready to learn, work safely and build a long-term career in an operational environment.

Mechanical Fitting

Develop practical fitting, maintenance and problem-solving skills across major terminal assets.

Electrotechnology

Build electrical trade skills across equipment, systems and maintenance activities.

Programme experience

Supported training before you join the team on site.

  • Start with an 18-week induction at the Mining and Energy Skills Program in Muswellbrook.
  • Fast-track core technical skills before continuing your apprenticeship on site.
  • Learn from experienced tradespeople in a workplace focused on safety, environment and community.
  • Access ongoing coaching, mentoring and support from Programmed and Port Waratah.

Inherent requirements

  • Australian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Completion of Year 10 by the end of 2026.
  • Hold a current driver's licence, or plan to obtain one in 2027.
  • Successfully pass a pre-employment medical.
  • Electrical candidates must also pass a colour vision test.
